The browser extension

It collects nothing. The Name That Color extension does not collect, store, transmit or share any personal information, browsing history, page content or usage data. It makes no network requests and has no accounts, analytics or advertising.

When you click the toolbar icon, the extension reads the color under your cursor from a screenshot of the tab you're on. The screenshot is held in memory only to read pixels, is never saved or sent anywhere, and is discarded. Images you drop or paste into the extension are handled the same way, entirely on your device.

Permissions. “activeTab” lets it see the page you clicked it on, and “scripting” lets it show its color card there. It does nothing until you click the icon. When you click Copy, it puts the color value (or swatch) on your clipboard. It only reads the clipboard when you paste an image into it.

The website

Pictures never leave your device. The camera feed, frozen frames and any image you open are processed in your browser and are never uploaded.

An anonymous tally. When you tap to freeze the camera or pick a spot in a picture, the page sends the color (its hex code) and whether it came from the camera or a picture, so it can be counted on the colors people pick page. Only running counts are kept: by day, by nearest color name, by position on the hue and lightness grid, and by exact color. We do not store your IP address or any identifier, no time finer than the day, and the requests are not logged.

Visit counts. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page visits. It uses no cookies and does not follow individual people. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which handles requests to it.

Third parties and changes

Color names come from the public-domain xkcd color survey and ship with the extension and the site; nothing else is shared with anyone. If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
